  • Entertainment Weekly Hypes ‘Sweet’ Teen ‘Abortion Road Trip Movie’
by Alexa Moutevelis on August 5, 2020 at 8:36 am

“A teenage abortion road trip movie doesn’t immediately seem like it would be packed with punchlines … but UNpregnant is the rare adolescent comedy that’s both spiky and sweet.” So says Entertainment Weekly’s (EW) Devan Coggan who snagged an exclusive interview August 4 with director Rachel Lee Goldenberg and stars Haley Lu Richardson (Veronica) and Barbie Ferreira (Bailey) about their upcoming HBO Max film UNpregnant, based on the young adult novel of the same name. Described by the stars as both “an adventure comedy” and “a road trip-y, friendship movie,” UNpregnant follows two Missouri teens as “they travel more than 900 miles to Albuquerque, which is the closest place Veronica can obtain a legal abortion without parental consent.” How adorable! Coggan admires how “the film nimbly weaves between heavy drama and manic shenanigans,” noting, “It’s certainly the only film this year that includes a candid breakdown of an abortion procedure and a slapstick scene involving a taser.” Abortion and slapstick comedy – a match made in heaven! But the mood turns more sober when abortion access comes up. You can joke all you want about dead babies, but women’s rights is super serious, guys! In between all the jokes and road trip mischief, there's a particular timeliness to Veronica and Bailey's story: Last summer, at the same time the film was announced, Missouri health officials attempted to close the state's only operating clinic, which would've made it the first state without a single abortion clinic since Roe v. Wade. (Since then, it's been ruled that the clinic could remain open.) Funny how they don’t mention that lone St. Louis, Missouri clinic’s ghastly record of injuring at least 76 women in botched abortions. Also left unsaid is that Planned Parenthood just opened up a huge new abortion facility a few miles from St. Louis, across the border in Illinois, so there would be no change in access if Missouri’s last clinic finally closed. The “abortion comedy” is no doubt meant more to elicit clapter than guffaws but “they hope audiences will both laugh and learn something” from their propaganda.   Ultimately, Goldenberg hopes UNpregnant can help raise awareness about the importance of safe, legal abortion access — no cross-country road trips required.  “I want there to be less shame and stigma around the topic of abortion,” she explains. “I want to educate people on the problematic existing laws and also demystify the abortion procedure. I’m not sure if one movie can do everything I want it to do, but it’s not going to stop us from trying.”  Yeah, that sounds like a sure-fire recipe for comedic gold! Meanwhile, UNpregnant is simply the latest example of Hollywood’s constant mission of “normalizing” the violent killing of the unborn: “We’ve seen films about abortion that are really hard, and they just tug on your heartstrings, and they’re very traumatic,” Ferreira, 23, adds. “I love those films, but I also wanted to see something where it normalizes it. It normalizes the choice and the decisions that people have over their bodies.” This is nothing new. In fact, this is not even Hollywood’s first attempt at an abortion comedy. For film, there was the 2014 “abortion romantic comedy” Obvious Child and 2015’s “funny” and “brilliant” Grandma, starring Lily Tomlin. On TV, Hulu’s Shrill and HBO’s Veep both made jokes out of abortion procedures. Nor is the premise original. There’s even a “feel-good comedy” play called Abortion Road Trip, where the main character travels from Texas to New Mexico for an abortion. Earlier this year, a similar story was told in the dramatic film Never Rarely Sometimes Always of a teen traveling to New York City to have an abortion without her parents’ consent.   Needless to say, whenever UNpregnant is released on HBO Max, it will remain UNwatched.

  • Column: Biden Backers Terrified of Debates
by Tim Graham on August 5, 2020 at 6:06 am

CNN’s Media Unit emails out a nightly newsletter titled “Reliable Sources.” It's not always reliable, since they have a slippery grasp on what their own network is actually putting on television and online. On August 3, Oliver Darcy led this newsletter with what he described as an “imaginary controversy” – the notion that Joe Biden might skip the presidential debates. Darcy was quoting Biden press secretary T.J. Ducklo’s spin: “Donald Trump and his allies at Fox News have decided an imaginary controversy about debates will be their latest attempt to distract Americans." Under the header “Where it originated from,” Darcy added “Yes, there have been some NYT opinion pieces and brief chatter about why Biden should skip the debates. Personally, I've never taken the suggestions too seriously.” On Twitter, Darcy’s colleague Brian Stelter agreed: “It is mostly a right-wing media tempest, fueled by hour after hour of Fox commentary (not reporting), far removed from campaign reality.” Both these men seemed supremely oblivious to the fact that CNN.com published an opinion piece by CNN analyst Joe Lockhart arguing Biden should skip the debates....and CNN booked a subsequent Lockhart interview over the weekend on CNN’s Smerconish show. Michael Smerconish didn’t lecture his guest that he was in danger of fueling a right-wing media tempest. So who’s “removed from campaign reality”? Omri Ceren retorted on Twitter: “In fairness to Stelter and Darcy, unclear if they're intentionally lying here. Could simply be that like everyone else, they never tune into CNN.” Lockhart – as well as columnists Thomas Friedman and Elizabeth Drew in The New York Times – expressed the firm belief  that Trump should be disqualified from debates. His truth-mangling and “extreme narcissism” makes debating unhelpful and unnecessary. His audacity is an unfair advantage. No one should believe that Biden will actually skip the debates. Liberals are far too arrogant about how Democrats will brilliantly wipe the floor with the Republicans every time – no matter who the Republican is – and for Trump, that goes triple. All these opinionators are offering is pre-debate spin, suggesting Trump’s patter is so abhorrent that he’s unworthy of any televised pedestal. This underlines why CNN and MSNBC now ignore or talk over Trump press conferences and speeches. At this point, we might expect they’ll talk over the president’s big convention speech instead of letting him speak. Liberals prefer Biden cocooning in safer venues, like occasional puffball press conferences with his compliant campaign press corps. When Stelter interviewed Ducklo on his Reliable Sources program on August 2, he mildly suggested Biden “owed the public” more access to the press, but added “I think what your candidate is doing is he's dodging Trump's punches with silence, which is probably an effective campaign strategy.” All this media acceptance of Biden’s basement strategy masks a terror over Trump winning again. On July 26, MSNBC host Joshua Johnson interviewed DNC boss Tom Perez, and revealed the inner panic of Democrats. “I cannot tell you how many people I know who are Joe Biden supporters who feel they're on the verge of a stroke all the time at the possibility of four more years of Donald Trump,” he said, “particularly with any gaffe Joe Biden makes. If he says something that comes out sideways, it's like you can feel everybody's heart kind of squeak shut.” This is especially true of the debates, which will have massive national audiences, and where gaffes might be immediately exploited and magnified by the president. Don’t believe the media swagger about Biden having this race in the bag. They’re terrified that Democrats nominated the Gaffe Machine.

  • NYC Health Official Resigns, Chides De Blasio, ABC/CBS Spike Own Reports
by Nicholas Fondacaro on August 4, 2020 at 10:37 pm

In a series of Tuesday afternoon tweets, the ABC News Twitter account informed readers of “breaking news”: New York City’s health commissioner Dr. Oxiris Barbot resigned her post with a letter chiding far-left Mayor Bill de Blasio’s handling of the coronavirus crisis. But when ABC’s World News Tonight aired six hours later, the critical news was nowhere to be seen. Similarly, CBS News spiked their story for Evening News even though they had put out a similiar tweet. As for NBC, they didn’t write an online story and they also skipped the Barbot’s resignation during NBC Nightly News. It was understandable why these liberal activists masquerading as journalists would keep this development from their millions of evening-time viewers: it goes against the narrative that New York was the COVID success story that defied President Trump. “Dr. Oxiris Barbot resigned as New York City's health commissioner, saying in her resignation letter that ‘the Health Department's incomparable disease control expertise was not used to the degree it could have been,’” ABC’s Aaron Katersly, Erin Schumaker, and Mark Crudele wrote in their article. While ABC noted that her resignation letter did have criticism of de Blasio, they used those quotes sparingly while doing damage control for the leader of their city (click “expand”): "I leave my post today with deep disappointment," her resignation letter said, taking aim at Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration. "Our experts are world renowned for their epidemiology, surveillance and response work. The city would be well served by having them at the strategic center of the response not in the background." Her replacement was immediately announced as Dr. Dave Chokshi, a Rhodes Scholar who served at the Louisiana Department of Health during Hurricane Katrina and was the principal health adviser to the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in the Obama administration. "It was time for a change, it became clear it was time for a change," de Blasio said during a Tuesday news conference, in response to a question about Barbot's resignation. It was "not obviously about one thing," he added. In CBS’s article, reporter Audrey McNamara suggested: “Barbot did not provide a reason for her departure, but wrote that the department ‘must be better leveraged’ as the city prepares for a likely second wave of the pandemic.” But it was a New York Times report from J. David Goodman that laid bare the “escalating tensions between City Hall and top city health department officials” that had been raging for months in the public eye. “Still, former city health officials said the mayor should have done more to listen to and support Dr. Barbot,” he wrote. He added: “Current and former health officials said the departure of Dr. Barbot reflected Mr. de Blasio’s history of distrust in his health department. From early in the coronavirus outbreak, he has clashed with the department on testing, public messaging and how quickly to shutter schools.” Instead of reporting on all of this, the CBS Evening News had White House correspondent Paula Reid mock President Trump for mispronouncing the name of Yosemite National Park. CBS also had chief congressional correspondent Nancy Cordes run an entire report suggesting Senate Republicans were fine with workers dying of the virus. Here’s how anchor Norah O’Donnell pitched it to viewers: Republicans insist that in order to fully reopen, businesses need to be protected from lawsuits if employees or customers are exposed to the virus. Workers say that puts them at risk, and our CBS News investigation found that at one company, the consequences have been deadly. These two networks have been largely silent on New York’s disastrous handling of the coronavirus, especially Governor Andrew Cuomo’s decision to pack COVID patients into nursing homes. But somehow it was Republicans who didn’t care about people. Their silence on the resignation was made possible because of lucrative sponsorships from Nutrisystem on ABC and Consumer Cellular on CBS. Their contact information is linked if you want to tell them about what they’re funding. CBS Evening News has also asked people to “text Norah” at this number: (202) 217-1107.

  • Andrea Mitchell: GOP Would 'Sully' Susan Rice with 'False Flags'
by Brad Wilmouth on August 4, 2020 at 10:25 pm

On her eponymous afternoon program, MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell fretted on Monday that Republicans would "try to sully" former Obama administration official Susan Rice over the Benghazi scandal and the Mike Flynn investigation as she covered for her by declaring that it would be a "complete false flag" to hit her over those issues. She also only vaguely touched on the controversy around California Democratic Congresswoman Karen Bass's history of expressing pro-Fidel Castro sentiments while not getting into the specifics.     Mitchell brought up the topic of Biden's search for a running mate with NBC News correspondent Mike Memoli, who began by vaguely recalling: Yeah, I think the candidate that we saw most on the defensive, of course, was Congresswoman Karen Bass. She was late to the vice presidential search process. The vetting began a little bit later, and we're seeing, obviously, some of the issues coming out -- her past comments -- her travels to Cuba, first and foremost among them. The Republicans -- the Trump campaign seizing on them over the weekend. Also questions about the remarks she gave at a Church of Scientology event in her district. He soon brought up Biden's relationship with Rice and the possibility he would choose her: And then, of course, Susan Rice, you know, Andrea, the relationship there that they forged in the Obama White House so critical. They worked in the trenches together, but the question there is how much of a campaign issue they allow to be brought in, the issues of Benghazi and, of course, the unmasking debate which the President and his team have really wanted to jump start the conversation. Mitchell preemptively defended Rice as she responded: "Well, the unmasking debate was a complete false flag, but -- and as well as Benghazi -- but she has not run for elected office, but they will try to -- they will try to sully anyone who is chosen of course." The MSNBC host soon turned to contributor Michael Steele and vaguely alluded to Bass's Cuba controversy as she asked if she would be hurt by it in Florida: And, Michael, how seriously do you think they should take concerns about Florida reacting to Karen Bass's --- not her more recent background because there was a huge congressional delegation on that trip with Kerry for Obama for normalization for the flag opening of the embassy --- but back in the '70s and some of her comments about Fidel Castro? How serious of a concern should they be about how that would impact Florida? By contrast, on Fox News Sunday, host Chris Wallace actually showed viewers a quote of Bass praising Fidel Castro in 2016 after the former communist dictator passed away, calling it a "great loss" for Cuba.     This episode of Andrea Mitchell Reports was sponsored by Kardia Mobile and Sleep Number. Their contact information is linked. Below is the relevant transcript: MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell Reports August 3, 2020 12:18 p.m. Eastern ANDREA MITCHELL: I want to ask you, from our reporting at the end of the week, it seemed to be (Kamala) Harris, (Susan) Rice, and Karen Bass moving up. What is your take after this weekend about the strengths of each and potential drawbacks? MIKE MEMOLI: Yeah, I think the candidate that we saw most on the defensive, of course, was Congresswoman Karen Bass. Kamala Harris, of course, has always been the betting favorite since even before both individuals got into the presidential race. There's a seeming natural chemistry between them -- a relationship that goes back, but the test that's being applied not just to Kamala Harris, but to everyone in this process, is a question of whether or not they can be seen as a team player. We've seen questions raised about her ambition from Biden allies that's provoked charges of sexism. The campaign very concerned about that, and we saw the campaign manager weigh in, saying all, you know, women of ambition win and that the former Vice President will choose somebody who is an ambitious woman in the end. And then, of course, Susan Rice, you know, Andrea, the relationship there that they forged in the Obama White House so critical. They worked in the trenches together, but the question there is how much of a campaign issue they allow to be brought in, the issues of Benghazi and, of course, the unmasking debate which the President and his team have really wanted to jump start the conversation. MITCHELL: Well, the unmasking debate was a complete false flag, but -- and as well as Benghazi -- but also she has not run for elected office, but they will try to -- they will try to sully anyone who is chosen of course. (…) MITCHELL: And, Michael, how seriously do you think they should take concerns about Florida reacting to Karen Bass's --- not her more recent background because there was a huge congressional delegation on that trip with Kerry for Obama for normalization for the flag opening of the embassy --- but back in the '70s and some of her comments about Fidel Castro? How serious of a concern should they be about how that would impact Florida? MICHAEL STEELE, MSNBC CONTRIBUTOR: Well, it becomes a very important concern, particularly in a state like Florida, because of the Cuban and Hispanic population there and how that's going to resonate with them. Again, this is all part of the narrative that they've got to go through. I don't know if you get an exact feel from the polling on that. It really will matter to who they're talking to on the ground in Florida to assess her narrative against those voters and how they look at this ultimately at the end of the day. They may look past it because it was so long ago and, given what Donald Trump has said and done, it pales in comparison for voters. MITCHELL: Indeed.

  • DC's 'Stargirl' Reveals Leftist Fantasy of Using Mind Control to Produce Liberal Policies
by Lindsay Kornick on August 4, 2020 at 9:57 pm

DC Universe and CW’s Stargirl has been a pleasant surprise over the summer. Unlike our other female superheroes, Stargirl managed to make it almost an entire season without bringing up anything political. Unfortunately, that came to an end in the latest episode, though probably not in the way any liberal fan would think. The series follows 15-year-old Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger) discovering her new stepfather Pat (Luke Wilson) was previously the sidekick to the staff-wielding superhero Starman (Joel Mchale) as well as the now-deceased superhero team The Justice Society of America (JSA). When the family moves to the small town of Blue Valley, Nebraska, they soon discover a resurgence of the JSA’s old archenemies, The Injustice Society of America (ISA). Using the staff, Courtney takes up the mantle as Stargirl and reforms the JSA with the help of her new high school friends to stop the villains. Over the season, we slowly learn the extent of the ISA’s master plan. The August 4 penultimate episode “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part One” finally reveals the whole thing as it’s put into motion. Our teen heroes, along with Courtney’s parents, aim to sneak into the ISA lair to destroy a mind-control device that the villains plan to use over half the country. Through further diving, they soon find the ISA’s manifesto for what they call a “New America.” In it, they find that the bad guys’ plans include ending racial discrimination, stopping global warming, and providing universal healthcare. Basically, it involves everything a leftist, or even our young heroes, would consider “good.”     Beth: Whatever they're going to make people believe in, they call it the "New Constitution." They wanna combat... Global warming? Oh, wait! They wanna force people to... Courtney: They're going to force people to what? Beth: Force them to embrace solar and wind power. They're going to eliminate discrimination over race, religion, sexual orientation... Rick: You're kidding me. Beth: Oh, and universal health care. Courtney: That sounds good. I-is that not good? Rick: Hey, Pat, are you sure we're on the right side? Of course, it’s not all perfect. They also learn that some people with stronger minds will apparently attempt to resist the reprogramming, leading to their deaths. In fact, at least 25% of the ISA’s 100 million targets are expected to die from the process. At least our heroes draw the line at needlessly murdering 25 million innocent people. Nowadays, it seems like even that’s not a red flag for the hard left anymore. In fact, it’s hard to believe that this is supposed to be a sympathetic appeal for our villains. The show clearly wants us to wonder whether the ends justify the means, but pairing terrible liberal means with even worse ends hardly makes anyone look good. All we see now are people willing to control and kill all those who disagree with the Democrats' platform. Considering the left’s frequent support or apologies for socialism and communism, perhaps that’s not a surprise anymore, either. I wonder if any liberals in their sponsors like Old Navy, Starbucks, and Facebook appreciate that. That being said, Stargirl is still light years ahead of Batwoman and Supergirl, even if it may borrow a plot or two. We can hope for the show to improve in its second season, but considering it’s now exclusively owned by the left-of-Bernie Sanders CW, it may be time to worry. After all, no one else is coming to save the day after this.
